Basements could become a comfortable part of your house too; with some key changes this "ugly" set of exposed pipes, disorderly storage and  visible central utilities may be transformed into a functional and workable space where family and friends can enjoy some extra "breathing" room. 

A finished basement within the height clearance determined by code presents a challenging task and risky venture suited only to professionals.  Avoid the common pit-falls do-it-yourselfers make when finishing a basement.

But before we proceed we need to Moisture proof walls and floors.  That is to correct any dampness problems and seal the floor and walls carefully. A thourough inspection of your exterior house foundation looking for potential sources of leaks must be the first step.

Install subfloor Choosing the wrong flooring material has dire consequences in a basement. Wood is a bad choice because it is so susceptible to mold and mildew. That's why wood sleepers, plywood subflooring, and wood finished flooring should always be avoided


Check mark

 

Framing a wall and ceiling. If keeping the basement warm is important to you,then building the perimeter walls using 2”x4” studs and adding insulation is needed.

Check mark Install insulation and vapor barrier

Check mark Rough in electrical, plumbing and wiring Lighting. If you have a sunlit basement", providing light for part of the area will be much easier. In areas without windows, lighting is a dire neccesity we can't compromise . Choosing energy-efficient fixtures and light bulbs will help to protect the environment and save you money.
